A glimpse into the lives and mindsets of Europeans, Ming Chinese, and others of the era.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Three books on the history of finance and trade: Conquest, Tribute, and Trade, by Howard J Erlichman; Vermeer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Hat, by Timothy Brook; The Ascent of Money, by Niall Ferguson\" href=\"http:\/\/www.petersahui.com\/optimist\/2011\/05\/three-books-on-the-history-of-finance-and-trade\/\">Erlichman, Howard J: Conquest, Tribute and Trade<\/a> &#8211;<\/strong> <em>I went into this book knowing only the bare bones about its subject matter, world trade and the birth of the European overseas empires in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century, and sadly, I finished it in much the same state.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Three books on the history of finance and trade: Conquest, Tribute, and Trade, by Howard J Erlichman; Vermeer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Hat, by Timothy Brook; The Ascent of Money, by Niall Ferguson\" href=\"http:\/\/www.petersahui.com\/optimist\/2011\/05\/three-books-on-the-history-of-finance-and-trade\/\">Ferguson, Niall: The Ascent of Money<\/a> &#8211;<\/strong> <em>The companion book to a TV series, this examines several themes in finance \u00e2\u20ac\u201c credit; stock markets; insurance; housing markets and more \u00e2\u20ac\u201c through a variety of historical yarns.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Two books on the history of human civilisation: Civilization, by Niall Ferguson; Why the West Rules \u00e2\u20ac\u201c For Now, by Ian Morris\" href=\"http:\/\/www.petersahui.com\/optimist\/2011\/07\/two-books-on-the-history-of-human-civilisation-civilization-by-niall-ferguson-why-the-west-rules-%e2%80%93-for-now-by-ian-morris\/\">Ferguson, Niall: Civilization &#8211;<\/a><\/strong> <em>Purports to be about how six \u00e2\u20ac\u0153killer apps\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (competition, science, property rights, medicine, consumerism and the Protestant work ethic) allowed Westerners to conquer the rest of the world, but ends up more a combination of trivia grab bag and all-purpose authorial soapbox.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Two books on Asia: Monsoon by Robert Kaplan; When Asia was the World by Stewart Gordon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.petersahui.com\/optimist\/2011\/04\/two-books-on-asia-monsoon-by-robert-kaplan-when-asia-was-the-world-by-stewart-gordon\/\"><strong>Gordon, Stewart: When Asia Was The World<\/strong><\/a><strong> &#8211; <\/strong><em>A collection of ten vignettes, mostly about individuals (the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153merchants, scholars, warriors and monks\u00e2\u20ac\u009d of the title) across almost 1,000 years.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Book review: Adapt, by Tim Harford\" href=\"http:\/\/www.petersahui.com\/optimist\/2011\/07\/book-review-adapt-by-tim-harford\/\"><strong>Harford, Tim: Adapt<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; <em>The blurb proclaims, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Tim Harford could well be Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Malcolm Gladwell\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, and that is a very apt analogy to describe this book. Harford is an economist and Financial Times columnist, but here he tackles themes that reach well outside the business world: open-mindedness, flexibility, innovation, resilience.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Two books on Asia: Monsoon by Robert Kaplan; When Asia was the World by Stewart Gordon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.petersahui.com\/optimist\/2011\/04\/two-books-on-asia-monsoon-by-robert-kaplan-when-asia-was-the-world-by-stewart-gordon\/\"><strong>Kaplan, Robert: Monsoon<\/strong><\/a><strong> &#8211;<\/strong> <em>The history and contemporary geopolitics of the Indian Ocean, from East Africa to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, as seen through the lens of the author\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s travels.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Why the West industrialised before the rest: David Landes\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 The Wealth and Poverty of Nations; Kenneth Pomeranz\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s The Great Divergence\" href=\"http:\/\/www.petersahui.com\/optimist\/2012\/01\/why-the-west-industrialised-before-the-rest-david-landes-the-wealth-and-poverty-of-nations-kenneth-pomeranzs-the-great-divergence\/\">Landes, David: The Wealth and Poverty of Nations: Why Some Are So Rich and Some So Poor<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Two books on the history of human civilisation: Civilization, by Niall Ferguson; Why the West Rules \u00e2\u20ac\u201c For Now, by Ian Morris\" href=\"http:\/\/www.petersahui.com\/optimist\/2011\/07\/two-books-on-the-history-of-human-civilisation-civilization-by-niall-ferguson-why-the-west-rules-%e2%80%93-for-now-by-ian-morris\/\">Morris, Ian: Why The West Rules &#8212; For Now<\/a><strong> &#8211;<\/strong><\/strong> <em>Human social development (both technological and organisational), as seen through the lens of European, Middle Eastern and Chinese history.
