Last month Nissan announced it would be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autonews.com\/article\/20130831\/OEM06\/309029952\/nissan-follows-bold-ev-moves-with-vow-of-self-driving-cars-by-2020#axzz2gGF8FnoU\">ready to bring them to the market by 2020<\/a>, and more recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2013\/09\/18\/us-tesla-selfdriving-idUSBRE98H01720130918\">Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk stated <\/a>that in the next three years, his company would prepare an autopilot that could handle 90% of miles driven.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the best overview of the topic is Popular Science&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popsci.com\/cars\/article\/2013-09\/google-self-driving-car\">primer on its technology, regulation, and commercialisation<\/a>. As to what it might enable, Ryan Avent at The Economist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/freeexchange\/2013\/09\/technology\">has some suggestions<\/a> (scroll down to the bottom of his piece), and also check out the comments thread.<\/p>\n<p>That said, there will be hurdles, both legal and psychological. Per <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2013-09-23\/self-driving-vehicles-progress-faster-than-rules-of-road.html\">Bloomberg<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ninety percent of respondents in a survey sponsored by insurer Chubb Corp., and released by ORC International Ltd. today, said a licensed driver should be in the driver\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s seat of a driverless car.
